MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Aldo on Top, Mendes No. 2

by Michael David SmithJose Aldo has now made his UFC debut and won the UFC's first featherweight title fight, an entertaining if not terribly competitive unanimous decision over Mark Hominick at UFC 129. So what does the UFC do with Aldo from here?

The fight I think the UFC really wants to make for Aldo is against Kenny Florian, who has more name recognition than anyone else on the UFC's featherweight roster. If Florian wins his featherweight debut against Diego Nunes at UFC 131, he'll instantly step into title contention -- and into the featherweight Top 10.

But for now, the No. 1 featherweight appears headed toward an August showdown with the undefeated Chad Mendes -- and on my featherweight rankings, that's the right call.

UFC 130 takes a hit as Edgar-Maynard postponed

It is not a good birthday for UFC lightweight Gray Maynard. His bout with Frankie Edgar, a rematch of their January draw, has been postponed as both fighters have suffered injuries. The fight is expected to take place in August or September.

WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis was considered for a fight with Maynard until injury sidelined him. As planned, Pettis will fight Clay Guida on "The Ultimate Fighter" finale in June.

"They were going to have me fight Maynard on that card. I said yes to that deal right away. I guess it turns out that it's not going to happen. I'm back to fighting Guida," Pettis told HeavyMMA.com. "It sucks that he got injured, because it kinda puts the whole lightweight division back on standstill. "

That moves the Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Matt Hamill bout into the main event, and Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story onto the pay-per-view. Demetrious Johnson vs. Miguel Torres and Tim Boetsch vs. Kendall Grove will air on Spike TV.

This puts a damper on what was a top-heavy card. The other pay-per-view bouts include Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson, Travis Browne vs. Stefan Struve, and Jorge Santiago vs. Brian Stann. Though there are exciting bouts, the card doesn't have anywhere near the same firepower as UFC 129, the card that broke records weeks ago in Toronto.

Early estimates have UFC 129 close to a million pay-per-view buys

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Though Saturday's UFC 129 main event left a lot to be desired, the show as a whole was still very much a success. Bringing in a record gate of over $12 million and a record attendance of near 56,000 fans at the Rogers Centre, the show was the UFC's biggest ever live event, and though it won't be the biggest pay-per-view event in the company's history, early numbers suggest it fared very well.

According to Dave Meltzer's WrestlingObserver.com, early trending numbers for the event have the buyrate coming in slightly below one million buys.

That early number is very likely to change and fluctuate as a more accurate estimate is able to come in, but based on the numbers WO typically looks at to help determine a show's buyrate, that's where the initial target is.

If it stays in this range near a million buys it's another big selling show from UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre, and that's made even more impressive considering he was taking on a fighter in Jake Shields most were not giving any chance at all.

Penick's Analysis: Though the main event was a dud, the rest of the card delivered in a big way, and with that many people tuning in on pay-per-view, more fans will be familiar with some of the guys that got featured on the card, most notably UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, who will get a major benefit from being under GSP on this card. This was the largest audience that had tuned to see him fight, and even though he wasn't at his best, fans should still want to see him compete again the next time out, and now that at least four times the people that watched his fight with Urijah Faber having seen him, it will make him an easier sell in a headlining capacity if the UFC tries to do that with him in his next fight.
